| Safe and Responsible Driving |
|
| Changing directions |
|
Before turning, always check your rear view mirrors
and over your shoulder to ensure the way is clear and you
have enough space to complete the move safely. You need to
turn around to make sure there is no vehicle in your blind
spot.
Switch on the indicator well before the turn so that other
drivers can make adjustments accordingly. Move into the proper
lane when the way is clear. Extreme left if you have to turn
left and extreme right if you have to turn right. Make sure
the way is clear.
Slow down before entering the turn. Adjust the speed according
to the turn. If the turn is sharp, get even slower.
Finish braking before turning to have complete control of
the turn.
Increase the speed steadily as you complete the turn.
Do not apply brakes and steer at the same time. You might
lose control over the vehicle.

|
|
|
| Right turn |
|
Always begin and end a right turn in the far right
lane in your direction.
Give indication well before the turn, and move into the far
right lane when the way is clear. Look ahead, right, left
and right again and check your blind spot. Make your turn
when the way is clear.
Do not turn your steering wheel to the right until you are
sure you can complete the turn otherwise you can get into
the way of the oncoming traffic.
Slow vehicles turn right at intersections in the same way
as larger vehicles. Do not pull up beside the slow vehicles
to make your turn at the same time. Stay behind and turn when
the way is clear. |

|
|
|
| Left turn |
|
|
Begin and end a left turn close to the
left
side of the road.
To make a left turn, signal well before the turn and
move into the left-hand lane when the way is clear.
If the left-hand lane is not marked, keep as far to
the left of the road as possible. Check your left
blind spot as you might not have seen smaller vehicles
or pedestrians. Let cyclists, rickshaws or scooter
riders go through the intersection before you turn.

|
| Left turn on a red light |
|
| You can turn left on a red light if there is no signal for
the left direction. Come to a complete stop, give way and then
turn left. |

|
| Backing up/Reversing |
|
|
Move slowly and take extra care while reversing your vehicle. Before
reversing,
check that the way behind you is clear. Be extra careful to look for children and cyclists. Put the
vehicle in the reverse gear
and turn sideways in your seat to
look over your shoulder in the direction you are moving.
Hold the steering wheel firmly.
If you are reversing straight back or to the left,
turn your body and head to the left and look back over
your left shoulder.
|
 |
|
|
When reversing to
the right, turn your body and head to the right and look
over your right shoulder.
Check the opposite shoulder also. If you are turning
while reversing, check that the front end of the vehicle
does not hit anything.

|
| U-turn |
|
|
Before making a U-turn, make sure there is no
sign saying not to. For a safe U-turn, you should be able
to see both sides clearly. Never make
a U-turn unless you can see clearly in both directions.
To make a U-turn, signal for a right turn, check your mirror
and over your shoulder and pull over to the right side of
the road. Stop, signal a right turn and when traffic is clear
in both directions, move forward and turn quickly and sharply
into the opposite lane. Check for traffic as you turn.

|
|
| Three-point turn |
|
| Make a three-point turn to
change directions on a narrow road. A three-point turn
starts from the extreme left side of the road.
Signal for a right turn. When the way is clear in both
directions, move forward, turning the steering wheel
sharply right towards the curb on the far side of the
road. When you have reached the right side of the road,
stop, and put the vehicle into reverse. Signal a left
turn. After checking that the way is still clear, turn
the steering wheel sharply to the left, while backing
up slowly to the other side of the road. Stop. Shift
to forward gear and check traffic. When the way is clear,
drive forward
