| There is a need for introducing a Demerit Point System whereby for every challan under the MV Act, the driver is awarded certain demerit points depending on the gravity of the offence committed. After the number of demerit points earned by a driver reach a certain limit a Warning Letter is issued to the driver advising him to improve his driving conduct. When the number of demerit points earned cross a particular limit the driving licence gets automatically suspended for a specified period. This system ensures transparency in the entire process and is followed by all Western Countries. A recommendation has been made to the Administration for suitable amendments to the Chandigarh Motor Vehicle Rules 1990 for the introduction of a similar system.
